"Are We There, Yet?" - Istanbul

This morning I found myself in Istanbul.  This was mildly remarkable since I wasn’t even looking for myself.  Just shuffling along, glanced up and there myself was.  Actually I was kind of glad I bumped into myself because I’m pretty sure myself owes me some money.  Not to mention the fact that I think he’s been seeing my girlfriend.

Originally named Byzantium after King Byza, then Constantinople after Constantine the Great, the city was christened Istanbul in 1930 after Joe Istanbul who ran a deli at the intersection of 42nd and Gardenia Street.  Apparently, Joe made a pastrami on rye unrivalled on any continent.  A seemingly odd naming convention, I must point out that for several centuries Istanbul was ruled by a rather aggressive race of footstools.  During this period in history it was the capital city of what later became known as “The Footstool Empire”.

Divided by the Bosphorous River, Istanbul sits partially in Europe, partially in Asia, and partially in Nebraska.  In fact, Omaha is the primary source for much of Turkey’s weaving material and treatment plants outside Lincoln provide the water for their famous baths.  Some of the museums have actually leaked over into neighboring Iowa.

Leaving Istanbul is always difficult; mainly because I don’t speak enough of the local language to hail a cab.  But, it’s time to move on.

Join me next time as I explore the wonders of Casablanca, Morocco.

I found this post to be of grave concern, mostly because it made perfect sense to me. Do you think breathing into a bag will help?

If any of this made sense to you at all, you should probably seek professional help, immediately.  Don't try to self-medicate with paper pouches.

I've been to Asia and Europe, but never to Nebraska. Maybe I'll see it on my next trip to Turkey.

Nebraska is hard to see because it's so small, but it is worth looking for, for the corn alone.

Hey Pin! (you don't mind if I call you by your first name do you?)
Great travelogue and geography lesson. See, I would have put Nebraska somewhere in a corn field in Iowa, so now I am worried about the Amish. Forget the cab, hail a buggy!
