Because He Needed A Home

PERCY'S DILEMMA

© R. W. O’Rourke

You should have seen his jaw drop,
That look of utter doom,
When Percy Willow's parents
Said "Go pick up your room."

He wondered if they meant it,
His gaze aimed down the hall.
He wondered how he'd lift it,
Or, if he could at all.

Worry spread on Percy's face,
But, peering round the door,
Much to his relief, he spied
A handle on the floor.

Percy thought, "I'll nail it to
The floor, and then just pull."
He hoped that he was strong enough,
The room looked pretty full.

With all that he could muster
He gave a mighty heave.
But, all he did was pull his arm
Three inches past his sleeve.

"This room is much too heavy,"
Said Percy, to himself.
"I'm sure it will be lighter
With these toys up on the shelf."

But, still he couldn't budge it,
The room still weighed too much.
So he gathered up his clothes,
Models, papers, books, and such.

While bent before the handle,
To give it one more tug,
Right beside his feet he saw
A shadow on the rug.

"I'm in trouble now", he thought,
As Mom leaned on her broom.
He still had not been able
To elevate his room.

But Percy's Mom was smiling,
And then he heard her say,
"Percy dear, your room looks fine,
Now go outside and play."

Still confused, he walked outdoors
And shuffled down the street.
But, froze in fear as Mom called out,
"Now son, PICK UP YOUR FEET!"
